To replace a trailer or container door seal, cut a sample of the old seal and measure its base (outer and inner width) and height (overall and side), then match the section. Remove the old seal and retaining rivets or screws, clean the door channel, push or slide the new seal in starting at a corner, fix it and close the door to check contact all round.
IllustrativeMeasure the old section
| Measure | What it is |
|---|---|
| Base outer width | Width across the mounting base |
| Base inner width | Width of the slot in the base |
| Overall height | Base to tip of the sealing lip |
| Side height | Height of the side wall |
Match these against the 16 standard truck & container sections.
Step by step
- Drill out rivets or remove screws holding the retainer.
- Pull out the old seal; clean the channel.
- Starting at a lower corner, fit the new seal into the channel without stretching it.
- At corners, use moulded corners or mitre the profile.
- Refit the retainer, close the door and check with a paper or light test.
Lengths, frames and corners
Seals are supplied in straight lengths, cut lengths or as framed gaskets with corners. Containers usually take a 3-sided gasket on one leaf and a 4-sided gasket on the other. See the truck door seal guide.
