Most car weather stripping replacements use a universal seal: a straight pinch-weld seal or self-adhesive strip sold by the metre and cut to length. It fits as long as the flange thickness (grip range) and the bulb size and position match the old seal. OEM-shaped seals are moulded for one model with formed corners; they are bought per vehicle, not by the metre. Measure the flange, bulb and total length, and photograph the old seal's cut end.

The three common types
| Type | Where it sits | Construction |
|---|---|---|
| Pinch-weld seal | Pushed onto the body flange | U-channel with steel clip carrier + sponge bulb (top or side) |
| Door-mounted profile | Clipped or glued to the door | Matched to the vehicle section |
| Self-adhesive strip | Glued to body or door | Universal, for windshields, roofs, small gaps |
What to measure
- Flange thickness – the metal plus paint the U-channel grips (sets the grip range).
- Bulb diameter and whether it sits on top of the channel or at the side.
- Total length round the opening.
- A photo of the cut end of the old seal next to a ruler is the fastest way to a correct match.
Material
Use EPDM for the bulb and the channel cover – it handles UV, ozone and temperature swings. PVC channels are cheaper but stiffen in the cold. Steel clip carriers hold best on thicker flanges; check that the carrier is fully enclosed so it cannot rust through.
Universal or vehicle-specific?
Universal pinch-weld seals cover many cars, vans, RVs and boats and are sold by the metre. Vehicle-specific sections need a sample or drawing; we match the profile but do not use vehicle brand names or logos.
Universal or OEM-shaped – which should I buy?
| Type | Sold | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Universal (straight) | By the metre | Cut to length, fits many vehicles | Corners are not pre-formed |
| OEM-shaped | Per vehicle | Exact fit, formed corners | One model only, higher cost |
We supply universal profiles from 10 m and extrude vehicle-specific straight sections from a sample. See what is a pinch weld seal.
Quick questions
Top bulb or side bulb?
It depends on how the door closes against the opening: the bulb must sit where the door edge lands. Copy the original seal's layout.
Need a seal for this?
Send your section, gap size or a photo of the old seal – Dora replies usually within 2 hours. Automotive weatherstrips are available from 10 m.
